The Beaujolais is home to 10 crus: Brouilly, Chenas, Chiroubles, Côte de Brouilly, Fleurie, Juliénas, Morgon, Saint-Amour, Reigné and Moulin-à-Vent. The hilly terrain, with slopes at grades as steep as 60% and valleys of up to 1,000 metres in depth, can only be worked by hand. The Gamay grape holds sway even if some vineyards are beginning to experiment with Chardonnay. The wines are very different depending on the cru, and reflect the great diversity of soils. They are often very drinkable and on the fruit in their youth. The best wines improve with keeping and the flavours of Gamay blend with those of Pinot Noir (the wines pinottent, to use the French term) with ageing.
